Organisers anticipate bright future for Cyprus event
With next month's 2006 Cyprus Rally fast approaching, the event's organizers have spoken out about the 2007 calendar released by the FIA which does not include Cyprus in next year's World Rally Championship.
absence from the 2007 line-up was a surprise to all concerned, especially given the consistently high praise which the event receives from fans around the world and the FIA itself.
With no explanation given for the absence of any of the excluded events -Australia and Turkey were also missing from the 2007 calendar - it has become clear that a decision was made to release the calendar in response to media pressure for a 2007 calendar and without full consultation with the rally organizers around the world.
In light of the many objections raised about the initial FIA announcement, all WRC rally organizers will meet in Paris on 23rd August to discuss the 2007 calendar, although no final decision will be made before a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council in October.
Cyprus Rally Press Officer Tony Christodoulou is one of many who feels that the Cyprus Rally has been poorly treated: Our rally is a popular event. It always has been and always will be. So for the event to be removed from the calendar makes no sense at all. No rally has ever been excluded from the Championship without due cause and the Cyprus Rally is praised all over the world as one of the best events in the WRC. Plus, with the addition of the Down Town Special, 2006 is shaping up to be the best Cyprus Rally ever as well as a highlight of the entire 2006 calendar.
I'm confident that we'll see a change of heart come October.
The Down Town Special (DTS) is a bold move by the organizers of the Cyprus Rally to combine the glamour of F1's Monaco Grand Prix with the no-holds-barred excitement of rallying. The DTS will bring high-speed rally action onto the winding streets of the coastal resort of Limassol marking a heart-pounding finale to the 2006 Cyprus Rally. Broadcast live, the DTS alone will bring rally action to more than 100 million viewers all over the globe.
Scheduled for 21st-24th September 2006, the Cyprus Rally has a justified reputation for challenging drivers and their cars like no other even on the World Rally Championship.
