Early retirement for Warmbold in Acropolis Rally
For the German Antony Warmbold and his British co-driver Michael Orr, the Acropolis Rally, the eighth of 16 rounds of the World Rally Championship (WRC), ended with a disappointment. As early as on the first special stage on Friday - the second of the rally's total number of stages
- they had to park their Ford Focus RS WRC with a broken suspension.
"For me, the round in Greece was over before it had really begun," the 26-year-old professional rally driver reported. "After two kilometres on the first stage on Friday, we hit a small wall along the inside of a corner that was hidden behind a small bush. We were driving in fifth gear and tore off a wheel."
Warmbold analyses: "It was a mistake made while writing the road book, because we failed to mark this point in the book during our practice. We should have made a note though of driving along the outside of the corner. When you attack one hundred percent during the rally, such mistakes can easily force you to retire."
For Warmbold, this meant the end of the Acropolis Rally. "Because the impact damaged the chassis as well, we were not able to start to the second leg under the SupeRally rules," explains the German.
The Ford driver's next competition will be the Rally of Argentina (15 - 17 July). The ninth round of the World Rally Championship will be staged on dirt roads around the city of Cordoba. After 2003 and 2004, this will be Antony Warmbold's third competition in South America. Last year, the 26-year-old professional rally driver barely missed scoring a Championship point there when he finished ninth overall. "I like the Rally of Argentina," the Ford driver says with eager anticipation. "Because the stages are quick, varied and lots of fun."
