With hot new downtown stage
Cyprus Automobile Association, the organisers of the Cyprus Rally, 12th round of the FIA World Rally Championship, announced in the Nicosia press conference that this year's Rally will bring the glamour of F1's Monaco Grand Prix coupled with the
no-holds-barred excitement of rallying to downtown Lemesos– with the first ever Downtown Special (DTS).
Set for the 24th September, this innovative event marks a WRC first and combines some of the most exciting aspects of rallying and Formula 1.
Super Special Stages are nothing new, but they're ordinarily hosted within stadiums. This year sees the Cyprus Rally take the concept one step further, with the drivers competing against the clock round the winding streets of the old part of the city and the sea front of Lemesos.
The organizers of the Cyprus Rally are determined to keep their event at the cutting edge of rallying, by pushing the boundaries of what has gone before. Taking in the picturesque sea front along with the town's medieval castle, old market, and many narrow and winding streets, the 3.5-kilometre DTS promises to be fast, exciting and unforgettable.
Held over a 3-hour period, including sideshow events and entertainment, the DTS will a spectacular finale to this year's Cyprus Rally. The event will be broadcast live to more than 100 million viewers in Europe alone.
A number of choices were available for venue, including stadiums, out of town gravel stages, and “usual” venues. But the final decision to organise this in-town spectacular was thanks to the positive response of the Lemesos Mayor, Demetris Kontides, who was keen to see an event which would promote both the rally and Cyprus as a leading holiday destination.
Scheduled for 22nd-24th September 2006, this year's Cyprus Rally promises to be another exciting test of man and machine under the warm Mediterranean sunshine.
