In honour of Finnish legends
The "Flying Finns" expression has become well-used all over the world as Finnish drivers have scooped numerous victories and world titles in the past few decades.
As the organiser of Finland's round of the FIA World Rally Championship AKK
Sports Ltd wishes to honour these achievements by launching the Flying Finns theme at the event.
In accordance with the theme, every year a great hero of the sport will be celebrated at Neste Oil Rally Finland. The first in this line of legends is Henri Toivonen, winner of three WRC events, who was tragically killed 20 years ago.
In celebration of Henri Toivonen's career an exhibition will take place in Rally HQ Jyväskylä Paviljonki. It will be ceremoniously opened on the Thursday, 17 August 2006. The occasion will be attended by Henri's brother Harri Toivonen.
Neste Oil Rally Finland's Event Director Risto Laine emphasizes the importance of the new theme: “Motor sport stars have been at the forefront of shaping Finland's image internationally. On the other hand, the sport's domestic popularity is to a great extent their achievement. By introducing the Flying Finns theme we wish to show our respect to them and their careers.”
Harri Toivonen is well pleased with the novel initiative: “I think it's fantastic that Neste Oil Rally Finland pays homage to heroes of the past and I'm proud that my brother Henri has been chosen to open this new scheme.
For him the rally in Jyväskylä was always a highlight of the season. In fact, he held it so important that he once tackled it despite being quite ill. Henri had, after all, been born in Jyväskylä, so he naturally had a soft spot for the city and its rally.”
Finland's round of the FIA World Rally Championship, Neste Oil Rally Finland, will take place in Jyväskylä from August 17th to 20th, 2006. The exhibition in memory of Henri Toivonen will be opened at Rally HQ, Jyväskylä Paviljonki, on the Thursday, August 17th.
