Catalunya : Kronos Citroen WRT - Shakedown
The RallyRACC, second event taking place in a Spanish speaking country has changed location for its shakedown. West of the rally route and around 50 kilometres from Salou as the crow flies, the 3,98 kilometre shakedown stage is
situated in between Tivissa and La Serra d'Almos. The distance from PortAventura's service park has justified the set-up of a dedicated service area on a field at the entrance of Mora la Nova.
Blue skies welcome the competitors early this morning but around 10 O'clock, it became grey and showers fell on the stage and the service area. Once the clouds were gone, temperatures increased significantly.
Before the rain, Sebastien Loeb
and Daniel Elena had time to complete a first run on medium compound. On their second pass, the anticipate wet conditions and used soft compound. For the final loop they came back to the original rubber. “The shakedown's profile looks like the stages but the grip is fairly inferior,” explained Seb. “After our second run, half of the stage was damp and the road very slippery. This said, the test went really well and given the grip difference, we haven't changed anything on the car for tomorrow, as defined during testing.”
A few meters from the World champion's car, the crowd gathered around the Xsara of Xevi Pons and Carlos Del Barrio. Xevi showed his car to Nani Roma, his Catalan friend since the time he was an enduro rider.
Nani, who has won the Dakar rally on a bike in 2004, and came third in 2006 in a car, has ‘squeezed' his 1m94 in the Xsara to discover the cockpit.
For his three runs, Xevi experienced similar conditions as Seb' with one pass on wet roads out of the three. After a test with Kronos Racing on Monday in the area of Manlleu, he was extremely satisfied with his car's set-up. He went from an interview to another before another very good friend of his came to visit : the Catalan motor-bike rider Isidre Esteve Pujol – KTM Gauloises – who also wanted to wish Xevi good luck on home ground.
Dani Sordo only started his shakedown at 10H30 like all the other P2 drivers. Also very demanded by the Spanish media, Carlos Sainz' protégé followed the same shakedown programme as his Kronos Racing's team-mates. Three runs through the ‘mini-stage' : the first one on medium compound and the next two on medium. The single change Dani has asked was to finetune the suspension.
As usual, the start ceremony will take place tonight. Seb' will start first at 20.00 on the podium in Salou, the ‘Passeig' named after the king Jaume El Conqueridor.
