Catalunya : OMV CEE - Preview
After his WRC debut this year in Mexico, Stepan Vojtech will already be facing his next international assignment this year at the Rally RACC Catalunya.
The 29-year-old OMV driver will be arriving in Spain with a feeling of success. In Mexico
the Czech duo Vojtech/Ernst reached seventh place in the Production Car World Rally Championship with the OMV CEE World Rally Team. This meant two WRC points.
In Spain Vojtech will exchange the series Mitsubishi for the Peugeot 206 WRC and will therefore be competing with the best of the best in rallying.
At home on tarmac
Since the OMV Rally Waldviertel last year gravel and snow had been new challenges to Stepan Vojtech. All in all the Czech completed four rallies in a row on surfaces that were unchartered territory to him.
Now finally the OMV duo Vojtech/Ernst will be returning to tarmac. And they want to take it up with the best of the best at the Rally RACC Catalunya, the fourth run of the FIA World Rally Championship 2006.
Vojtech: “I don't think it will be that much of a change to Mexico for us. We want to make good speed right from the beginning. Last year in Germany we've already proven that we can be among the top ten at several special stages. This will also be our goal in Spain even though we completely lack any experience there. But tarmac is our favourite surface and we know the Peugeot 206 WRC inside out.”
Newly assembled WRC
OMV driver Stepan Vojtech can dispose of a newly assembled vehicle at the third WRC rally of his career. Engine and gearbox have been revised, electronics completely exchanged. Unfortunately adverse weather conditions in Central and Eastern Europe prevented testing on tarmac prior to the rally. Vojtech: “I'm sure that the Peugeot is in prime condition. But we'll only be able to say for sure during the shakedown on Thursday. One mustn't forget that the 206 WRC is from 2000 – that is a difference of six years to up-to-date technology. But it is still going very fast.”
Just the beginning
The rallies in Mexico and Spain should be more than mere excursions to the WRC for Stepan Vojtech. The almost 29-year-old who will be celebrating his birthday during the shakedown in Spain next Thursday is taking the WRC project seriously.
At least two to three further assignments are planned this year while the Czech OMV duo wants to focus solely on the FIA World Rally Championship next year. Vojtech: “We are planning starts in Argentina and at the OMV ADAC Rallye in Germany. I hope that I'll also be able to compete again in New Zealand with the OMV CEE Team. To gain further experience each rally counts.”
