Asia-Pacific : Rally of Canberra - Finish
Australian rally driver, Cody Crocker, has produced a dominant performance across two gruelling days of competition to win the first round of 2006 FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship (APRC), Subaru Rally of Canberra.
team-mate, Eli Evans finished second and Japanese Hiroshi Yanagisawa was third. Subaru driver set 1-2-3 finish at opening round of 2006 APRC.
Crocker, behind the wheel of a 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STI spec C, won both Leg One and Leg Two of the Canberra Rally, to score the maximum 16 points on offer in the season opener.
His former Subaru teammate Dean Herridge finished in second place in his Impreza, one minute 2.6 seconds further back, while Eli Evans, driving Les Walkden Rallying's second Subaru, finished third.
As Herridge is not a registered competitor for the whole championship, Evans took the points for second place in an impressive debut in his Group N Subaru. He sits in second outright in the championship with 11 points.
The exceptionally tough conditions, with high temperatures and rough roads, took their toll on the field with just nine competitors finishing the event.Crocker, who won seven of the eight stages on Leg1, won a further six of the nine contested second day to win the Subaru Rally of Canberra title for the second year in a row. It was a repeat of the 2005 result with Herridge, the 2004 winner, again in second place. It is Crocker's third victory in Canberra. He was also victorious in 2003.
Crocker was naturally delighted with the start to his Asia-Pacific campaign.
"This is the perfect start for us," Crocker said. "This is a very difficult event, the roads are always some of the toughest we deal with every year, and to leave here with maximum points is brilliant. It also wasn't easy because it was with a new car, a new co-driver (Ben Atkinson, Chris's older brother) and a new team. We know from here that we can have heaps of room to improve, which is extremely positive for us."
