Guy Wilks says his performance on Friday’s opening stage was his best so far on the Monte Carlo Rally.
The Skoda UK Motorsport driver, who is celebrating his 29th birthday today, was second fastest on the 30.42-kilometre test and leapt from the seventh place he held on Thursday
night to fifth in the overall standings as a result.
He said: “I’m really chuffed and it’s definitely the best stage I’ve done so far. To be honest I felt I could have been quicker but there was so much deep snow that it was really hard to follow the wheel tracks of the car in front.”
Even though fifth place would earn Wilks four Intercontinental Rally Challenge drivers’ points, the Briton insists he would settle for a lower finishing position if it meant he completed the entire rally distance tonight.
“I’m not going to fight for fifth because getting to the end is the priority for me,” Wilks added.
