Route uses mountain roads and hilly stages
Created at the beginning of the 50s, the Acropolis Rally rapidly obtained the reputation of an endurance event. Even though many points have been altered to meet the requirements of a modern rally, the Acropolis remains one of the toughest events on the calendar for cars, drivers and co-drivers as they must race through the twisty mountain roads of the Lamia region, on incredibly broken terrain to reach the finish.
Similar to the Cyprus Rally in terms of surface, the Acropolis Rally is unforgiving to men and machines. Relatively low average speeds and intense seasonal heat render engine cooling difficult and many retirements can ensue.
This rough surface gives an advantage to robust cars and experienced drivers. It is not surprising that Colin McRae won five times in Greece, including three victories at the wheel of the indestructible Focus.
To offer a better show for the spectators, a superspecial stage takes place inside the stunning Olympic Stadium since 2005. This new feature has been a major success and is unanimously appreciated by the drivers.
