New partnership for the 2007 Dakar
The list of 185 cars taking part in the 29th edition of the Dakar, from January 6th to 21st 2007, will include the name of Yvan Muller, further to his announcement that he wished to change his winter scenery, after ten Andros Trophy titles.
This first entry of Yvan Muller in the epic race is the culmination of three separate dreams: those of André Dessoude, who has great hopes of this new recruit, those of Yvan Muller, tempted by this extraordinary adventure, and those of Hugues de Chaunac, who wanted to return to the event, and who has done so by setting up a technical partnership between Team Dessoude and ORECA.
For André Dessoude, both founder and Team Manager, it was a natural decision to recruit Yvan Muller: « I knew that Yvan was very interested by the Dakar. I contacted him, and we got on well from the start. We quickly came to an agreement, and I am delighted to be able to announce that he will be joining us. As well as marking Yvan's arrival, the 2007 Dakar will also see the start of a technical collaboration with ORECA : I am very pleased to work with someone as professional as Hugues de Chaunac. From our first meeting, we were on the same wavelength, and I know we are going to get on well. This technical partnership with ORECA is the ideal complement for a team such as ours. Their design department opens up new possibilities to us, in terms of the development of the chassis and suspension in particular. »
Over the last 25 years, Team Dessoude has shone on the Dakar on many occasions. The support from ORECA, with its expertise in all areas of motorsport over the past three decades, can only be beneficial to both parties, who will be able to combine their efforts on the most prestigious of the African adventures.
Moreover, the prestigious list of drivers who have driven for both teams over the years reads like a page from motorsport history : Stéphane Peterhansel, Kenjiro Shinozuka, Colin McRae for Team Dessoude, Jacky Ickx, Hubert Auriol, for ORECA…
It is no coincidence that ORECA has chosen this moment to return to Rally Raid competition, as Hugues de Chaunac explained: « The Dakar was a fantastic experience for us. Within Oreca, over the past months, we have been studying and debating the possibility of returning to the category. The return of Yvan Muller to the team, in the context of the FIA World Touring Car Championship, accelerated what had been, until then, just a project. And thanks to the enthusiasm with which André Dessoude responded to our idea of a partnership, the 2007 Dakar will see our return. I would also like to thank SEAT Sport for their sporting attitude in giving their driver permission to take part in the Dakar.»
Yvan Muller, known as the « king of the ice », and the winner of numerous European touring car championships, is perfectly aware of what awaits him in this major new challenge: « My ambition is to take part and to learn as much as possible, to acquire experience in this category, which is totally new to me, and to allow me to prepare for future editions.»
There is no doubt, with so much determination and will, Team Dessoude-ORECA will be a force to be reckoned with on the African trails come January…
