Demonstrates winning RS 1800
Ari Vatanen would have been at the Dakar Rally this year had Nissan not pulled out a year earlier than expected. Now the rally legend is open to the idea of a return in 2007.
"For 2007, Well, we'll have to wait and see," Vatanen told BP
Ultimate World Rally Radio at this weekend's RallyDay at Castle Combe. "I certainly haven't ruled it out and you know, something interesting might happen. I did the 1000 Lakes a few years ago and finished 11th. So I think, in the right conditions, I could win it."
Vatanen was WRC Champion in 1981 with Ford and went on to record three Dakar wins with Peugeot in 1987, 1989 and 1990 and another win with Citroen in 1991. IN addition to his rally talents, Vatanen was elected a Member of the European Parliament in 1999.
At Castle Combe last weekend, Vatanen joined former co-driver Dave Richards of Prodrive to demonstrate the Escort RS1800 which he claimed the championship in over 20 years ago.
