Dakar - Motorbikes - Stage 3
At the conclusion of Monday's third leg of the 2009 Dakar Rally, run across a 616-kilometre distance between Puerto Madryn and Jacobacci, Marc Coma signed his second stage win and added extra time to his overall lead. Meanwhile, rival motorbiker
Cyril Després had to deal with tyre problems again and continued his slide down the standings.
After three days of racing in Argentina, the highly-expected Coma-Després battle has already lost much of its bite thanks to the tyre issues which keep harassing the Frenchman. Coma has maintained his speed while Després has fallen back; the Spaniard enjoyed a 17-minute lead on Pal-Anders Ullevaseter and Jordio Viladoms on this stage.
Cyril Després is now over an hour behind the overall leader, and unless his rival encounters problems of his own, chances of winning this year's Dakar Rally currently appear slim indeed.
A great performance on David Frétigné's part brought his Yamaha into second place in the general standings. However, with nearly a 40-minute deficit on the highly competitive Marc Coma, his odds of overtaking the Spaniard remain almost as distant as Després'.
Pal-Anders Ullevalseter holds third position on the general rankings' provisional podium.
