Al Attiyah leads, misfortune for Chicherit
Dakar - Cars - Stage 1
An obviously energized Guerlain Chicherit undertook the Dakar Rally this morning, having set aside his apprehensions following the serious accident which occurred during the 2007 edition of the event. However, bad luck struck again when a roll put
an end to the battle he was bringing to the men leading the race.

Guerlain and co-driver Laurent Baumel came out of the accident unharmed, but the same could not be said of their BMW X3CC. According to the fellow competitors who stopped to ensure the crew was all right, Guerlain and Baumel were left wondering if their machine would run again.

Meanwhile, things were going well for Nasser Al Attiyah, also driving a BMW X3CC: the Cross-Country Rally World Cup winner and current European Baja Cup titleholder won the Dakar's opening stage, a result which reassured team boss Sven Quandt.

Second place today went to Carlos Sainz and his Volkswagen Touareg 2, as the factory team does its best with its objective of clinching a first Dakar win.

There was an engine alert for Luc Alphand's brand-new Mitsubishi Lancer, but the Frenchman managed to reach the end of the 371-kilometre stage. The next objective is reaching the Santa Rosa campsite...
