Second Dakar for the girls
Carole Montillet and Mélanie Suchet are taking part in their second Dakar, this time with a T1 Pathfinder. A bit difference for the two skiing champions, as Carole Montillet explains :
« Our number one objective for this Dakar is to enjoy
ourselves. But this time, we will be driving a much more competitive race car. The Pathfinder T1 is really a step up from the T2 we had last year. More competitive, more supple, we feel that we have a real race car in our hands. We worked a lot on the mechanical side, learning to make some repairs ourselves, just in case…
We are now fully operational for most of the breakdowns we could have, and we should be able to get ourselves out of trouble whenever possible. To get to Dakar is one of our aims, but we want to get there in good condition. Our mechanical training gave us confidence and we are now able to know what is harmful when we are torturing our car…
We are more aware of the consequences of our mistakes on the vehicle. It is essential to take care of the vehicle, to manage the race in an intelligent manner without neglecting the endurance side – these are all factors we now understand and have integrated into our race plan. We hope to have another superb adventure. Mélanie and I will share the wheel, but rather than alternating days, we will each drive over the sort of terrain that suits us best.
We have realised that we have different skills, and we need to use them to best effect. Even if Mélanie has more navigational skills than me, we nevertheless want to share the driving, as we did at the start. It would be a shame to deprive ourselves of each other's skills. »
