The 2006 Dakar Rally is an event of superlatives: 508 participants, including, for the first time, five Volkswagen Race Touareg 2 prototypes, set off on the long 9,043 kilometre journey from Lisbon, Portugal to Dakar in the Senegal on the 31 December. The crews taking part to the Dakar will meet in Lisbon on 28 December for the start of the 2006 edition of the famous African race.
On 31 December, the Dakar will get underway from Portugal's Capital and then head for Africa via Spain.
Nearly 180 cars are registered for the race.
