As a result of his shoulder injury
After a glorious World Championship winning season, Nicky Hayden's 2006 has come to a slightly premature end.
The Kentucky Kid will miss next week's test in Jerez, the final 800cc event of the year, as a result of a shoulder injury.
In a surprising twist, the shoulder condition was aggravated by the crash that Hayden suffered in Estoril alongside team-mate Dani Pedrosa, one of the most dramatic moments of the season.
Hayden kept the injury under wraps ahead of the Valencia Grand Prix so as not to lose any psychological advantage in the title race, and took his first MotoGP accolade.
After undertaking two post-season tests, Hayden now returns to the US to have the injury assessed. No date has yet been set for possible surgery, which may entail the removal of a metal plate previously inserted in his shoulder.
