Estoril : 250cc - Day One
Penultimate round of the 2006 season, the Portuguese GP provides Jorge Lorenzo with a first opportunity to seal the 250cc World title.
The Fortuna Aprilia rider is well aware of this situation but keeps his feet firmly on the ground.
no way is he going to take it for granted. Lorenzo is ready to work hard on the set-up of his bike, in order to be competitive in the race and fight for a victory that would hand him the crown.
The Spaniard got a steady start with the second fastest time of the qualifying session, only seventy-five thousandth of a second behind Hiroshi Aoyama. The KTM rider put himself on provisional pole after a delayed session, putting in a time of 1'42''282.
Early on, Aoyama had a scare when a metal grill on the kerb became exposed, with the Japanese rider keeping his bike upright despite making contact. After the red flag was shown, there was a fifteen minute wait before the eventual restart.
Jorge Lorenzo and Héctor Barbera, fastest this morning, completed the top three with a Fortuna Aprilia one-two. Fourth fastest was Alex de Angelis, ahead of Cardion AB's Jakub Smrz.
Roberto Locatelli was the fastest Honda rider of the day, ahead of Humangest's Andrea Dovizioso. The latter today announced his continuation with his team for the 2007 season, backed by extra Honda development.
Marco Simoncelli, Yuki Takahashi and Aleix Espargaro rounded off the fastest ten of the day in the quarter litre category.
