Garry McCoy will ride in Portugal
The Ilmor MotoGP team is set to debut in Portugal next weekend as a wild card team, with Garry McCoy.
Team Manager Mario Illien explained: "Ilmor was part of Mercedes until last July. We've had bike project in pipeline for a long
time. It's a new start for everybody next year with the 800cc bikes."
"The bike looks compact, we're running with Michelin for the two wild card races and Garry's experience was an important factor in our choosing him to ride in Portugal and Valencia," said Illien.
McCoy, who won in Portugal back in 2000, also revealed his thoughts on the new team and bike. "The bike is actually pretty good. My first test I was comfortable straight away, and that's not always the case. It's different to any bike I've ridden before; it's small with a high RPM."
"I really pushed for the Michelin tyres, but the team also realised that they would be a good choice and I'm happy to have them onboard. I'm not entirely convinced that the bike is completely ready, but we'll wait and see in Portugal," concluded Garry McCoy.
