Rain spoils season opener
Rain spoiled the long-awaited first round of the 2009 MotoGP World Championship.
It started to pour down three minutes to the start of the race and Race Direction had no other solution than to delay the start.
Unfortunately, it didn't
ease and the Qatar GP had to be cancelled, much to the disappointment of the whole paddock.
With rain falling so hard and soaking the Losail International Circuit, it was simply impossible to ride as track conditions were too tricky and the visibility so poor. The decision was taken after half an hour with a postponement to Monday under consideration.
Earlier in the evening, the 125cc race had to be stopped after only four laps had been completed. Andrea Iannone won the shortest ever GP race ahead of Julian Simon and Sandro Cortese.
The 250cc race was delayed by 40 minutes and shortened to 13 laps. It was won by Spaniard Héctor Barbera. He was joined on the podium by Jules Cluzel and Mike di Meglio.
