Derbi rider Efrén Vázquez remains in the care of medical staff at Bilbao's San Sebastian hospital, having been transferred there at the weekend after his crash in testing in Valencia on Friday.
It was considered best for the young Basque rider to
be closer to his family in his native Bilbao during his immediate recovery from the operation he underwent in Valencia on Friday on his fractured right ankle, sustained on the last day of the latest 125cc/250cc test.
Vázquez crashed whilst testing his new Derbi machinery and he became entangled in the front wheel of the bike, causing an ankle fracture and damage to his Achilles' tendon. However, if his injuries heal as expected he should be able to return to riding at the preseason test at Estoril in a month's time.
The rider himself philosophically commented, “Although it has been a bit of a scare I actually think I have been quite lucky. The broken bones were not dislocated and fortunately there is no ligament damage other than to my Achilles. Also the doctors told me the cut which the brake disc caused was very close to a main artery which means it could have been far more serious.”
