Sepang : 250cc race
The 250cc World Champion Jorge Lorenzo (Fortuna Aprilia) dramatically retained his title with one round of the 2007 season remaining thanks to a third place finish at the Polini Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix, after Andrea Dovizioso (Kopron Team Scot)
crashed on the penultimate lap of the race.
Victory went to pole man Hiroshi Aoyama of Red Bull KTM, with Hector Barbera (Team Toth Aprilia) crossing the line second, while Lorenzo battled for the lead and settled for the final podium spot to take an insurmountable 56 point lead into the last race of the year.
The Majorcan 20 year-old rider will therefore participate at Valencia as a double World title winner thanks to his Sepang success, which he celebrated like a boxing champion with one of his usual fancy dress escapades.
Mika Kallio (Red Bull KTM) ended up fourth, but was in an apologetic mood at the conclusion of the 250 action, having admitted being at fault for taking out Dovizioso who was contending the lead in the final stages – only to crash out and remount to finish 11th, finally ending the title battle.
Lower down the classification Thomas Lüthi (Emmi Caffe Latte) came home fifth, with Julian Simon (Repsol Honda) just behind him in sixth.
It was a miserable afternoon for the Master – Mapfre Aspar team, with Alvaro Bautista stopping on lap seven due to a technical fault when riding in fourth, having started fifth on the grid – while Alex de Angelis crashed out on the 11th lap when in seventh place, having suffered four accidents previously over the course of the Sepang weekend.
