Phillip Island : 250cc race
Under clear blue skies in sunny and cool conditions at Phillip Island MotoGP-bound 250cc World Champion Jorge Lorenzo (Fortuna Aprilia) took a big step towards defending his title at the GMC Australian Grand Prix.
The margin of victory
for the Majorcan rider was over 19 seconds as he held the lead from start to finish from pole, having dominated proceedings throughout the weekend at the Australian circuit.
Lorenzo now holds a 45 point lead in the general standings over Andrea Dovizioso (Kopron Team Scot) with two races to go, after the Italian finished third in this race to keep his slim title chances barely alive.
Second place went to 125cc World Champion Alvaro Bautista (Master Mapfre Aspar), meanwhile, as the young Spaniard fought valiantly with Dovizioso to secure his seventh 250cc podium.
Hiroshi Aoyama (Red Bull KTM) just missed out on the podium himself on the final straight, finishing just 0.073s behind Dovizioso, with Thomsa Luthi (Emmi Caffe Latte Aprilia) a very close fifth.
The slight chance of Alex de Angelis (Master - Mapfre Aspar) winning the title finally evaporated as his finished ninth and therefore dropped 72 points behind Lorenzo.
