Motegi : 250cc – Day two
Repsol Honda's Shuhei Aoyama took a surprise first pole of his career at Motegi on Saturday as he raised his game for his home event at the A-Style Grand Prix of Japan.
Having been eighth on the provisional grid the younger Aoyama brother
cut 1.228s off his Friday best on the last of his 18 attempts to secure pole at the track where he made five wild card appearances before gaining a full time ride for the 2006 campaign.
For his home race at the Twin Ring venue where he finished sixth last year and where his older brother Hiroshi Aoyama has taken the 250cc glory for the last two seasons, the Honda man put in a time of 1'51.327s - to come out top by 0.139s ahead of second fastest participant Andrea Dovizioso of Kopron Team Scot.
World Champion Jorge Lorenzo (Fortuna Aprilia), who has an outside chance of retaining the title this weekend, improved after some problems in the previous sessions to take third, while his fellow Spaniard and arch rival Hector Barbera (Team Toth) completes the front row.
Red Bull KTM's Mika Kallio ended up fifth on the grid courtesy of the time which gave him provisional pole and he will be joined on the second row by his team-mate Hiroshi Aoyama, Julian Simon (Repsol Honda) and Yuki Takahashi (Kopron Team Scot).
