Estoril : 125cc – Day Two
Polaris World's Mattia Pasini confirmed his seventh pole of the 2007 World Championship season this afternoon at Estoril as he continued his dominance of the bwin.com Grande Premio de Portugal weekend.
Pasini set a new circuit best lap of
1'44.675, beating the record he set himself in taking provisional pole by 0.44s.
The Italian 22 year-old will start from the front of the grid tomorrow in the thirteenth race of the year for the single cylinder competitors, as he goes in search of his fourth win of the season – and a second in successive races following his victory on home soil at Misano in the last round.
Pasini's early season run of misfortune - which saw him fail to finish several races due to mechanical problems – means he has no realistic chance of fighting for the title but he is determined to end the year on a high, having rediscovered that winning feeling in recent races.
However, Sunday's contest will not be straightforward, with Pasini to be joined on the front row by Valsir Seedorf Derbi's Lukas Pesek, who qualified 0.258s off the pace in second, while Skilled Racing Team's Simone Corsi starts third and World Championship leader Gabor Talmacsi is fourth.
Sandro Cortese (Emmi Caffe Latte) in fifth, Sergio Gadea (Bancaja Aspar) in sixth, seventh placed Pol Espargaro (Belson Campetella Aprilia) and title chasing Hector Faubel (Bancaja Aspar) complete the front row.
