Pasini takes provisional Portuguese pole
Estoril : 125cc – Day One

After leading the way in an interrupted free practice run this morning at the bwin.com Grande Premio de Portugal, Polaris World's Mattia Pasini stayed on the pace this afternoon at Estoril to take provisional pole at the thirteenth round of
the season.

Had it not been for Pasini's unbelievably bad luck in the first half of the season he would surely be fighting for the title with Bancaja Aspar's category frontrunners Gabor Talmacsi and Hector Faubel, and the Italian will attempt to confirm his seventh pole of the season tomorrow and build on his victory on home soil in the last round at Misano a fortnight ago.

Pasini set a new 125cc circuit best lap at the Portuguese track to earn provisional pole, with a time of 1'45.115s, which was 0.351s quicker than World Championship leader Talmacsi managed - as the second fastest participant in the session.

It was a less satisfactory outing for Talmacsi's Aspar colleague and title rival Faubel, however, as the Spaniard suffered a crash with two minutes to go and was down in seventeenth on the timesheet.

Nonetheless the Hungarian still had a team-mate next to him when the times were finalised as Sergio Gadea lapped third fastest, just 0.031s separating the Aspar pair, whereas fourth placed Valsir Seedorf Derbi's Lukas Pesek was more than half a second off that pace.

Occupying the provisional second row of the gird, meanwhile, are Pasini's team-mate Joan Olive, Belson Campetella Aprilia's Pol Espargaro, Red Bull KTM's Tomoyoshi Koyama and Multimedia Racing's Raffaele de Rosa.

RACC Aprilia wildcard Ricard Cardus recovered from his morning crash to provisionally qualify in last position (35th), a gap of 5.739s behind Pasini.
