Quarter litre class king Jorge Lorenzo (Fortuna Aprilia) kept his crown firmly in place this afternoon at Misano with the eighth victory of his title defence season to increase his general standings lead to 54 points with five races to go.
was cruel luck for Lorenzo's championship rival Andrea Dovizioso (Kopron Team Scot), who held the lead up until lap 18 of the Gran Premio Cinzano di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini, when a problem with his bike saw him fall back and eventually retire – ending a run of 31 consecutive point scoring Grands Prix finishes.
That left the seemingly invincible Lorenzo to equal his number of race wins from last season as he crossed the line three and a half seconds ahead of Hiroshi Aoyama (Red Bull KTM) and seven seconds in front of third placed Hector Barbera (Team Toth).
Thomas Luthi (Emmi – Caffe Latte Aprilia) was two tenths of a second off a podium, with Alex de Angelis (Master Mapfre Aspar) just five tenths further back in fifth.
Shuhei Aoyama (Repsol Honda) and Roberto Locatelli (Metis Gilera) crossed the line ahead of eighth placed Alvaro Bautista (Master Mapfre Aspar) – who crashed early in the race when fighting for third.
A nasty highside ended Red Bull KTM rider Mika Kallio's hopes of a podium spot, the Finnish rider lucky to escape serious injury when he spectacularly crashed with five laps to go.
