“Life is like this”
Injured Gresini Honda rider Toni Elias gave a press conference yesterday as he was released from the Institut Universitari Dexeus in Barcelona where he has been recuperating following his horror crash at Assen last Thursday.
Elias broke his left
femur in a crash during the first free practice session at the A-Style TT Assen last week and was operated on in the Netherlands to stabilise his badly broken leg, before being transferred back to his native Catalunya for further assessment by local specialists Doctor Xavier Mir and Doctor Angel Charte.
The 24 year old Honda rider yesterday spoke to the media alongside the two doctors, who explained what had been done in the operation and details of the rehabilitation programme which lies ahead – with Elias optimistically targeting a comeback at Brno in the Czech Republic on 19th August.
For his part Elias was in a positive frame of mind and commented: “It has been a difficult week for me, but life is like this. I can't change the past but I could change the future. It's hard but I accept this situation very well. The only thing I can do is fight and be strong in the mind. My mentality is to one day become World Champion and I will fight for this with my best.
Meanwhile team boss Fausto Gresini has explained that he is looking for a temporary replacement rider for Elias for at least the forthcoming couple of rounds in Germany and the USA.
He explained: “Being optimistic we're are hoping that Elias could return at Brno. It's a difficult time of the season to find trusted riders to replace Toni in his absence. We are starting to look at riders in the British Superbikes series and the AMA series in the States.”
