had come from 20th on the grid to lead the race, but on the last lap Bautista overtook him on the inside while cornering, forcing the 250cc title holder to the ground, before the 125cc champion pushed on for victory with Lorenzo remounting to finish eighth.
Bautista started from pole for the first time since his move up to the quarter litre category and following that remarkable final lap incident he took maximum points, overtaking his Master - Mapfre Aspar team-mate Alex de Angelis on the final straight.
The final podium place went to Spanish Team Toth Aprilia rider Hector Barbera who equalled his best result of the season, mounting the rostrum for the first time since Qatar.
Kopron Team Scot's Andrea Dovizioso was given great support from the home crowd but was only able to finish in fourth place as the most successful Italian in the race, while Thomas Luthi had to settle for fifth after starting on the front row for the second race in succession.
A brave ride from Metis Gilera's Roberto Locatelli saw him cross the line in 18th place, his solid comeback performance delighting the thousands of Italians watching on from the Mugello grandstands.
Dovizioso has now scored points at the last 26 races and his fourth place saw him cut Lorenzo's championship lead to 27 points, with the Spaniard picking up his bike on that remarkable last lap to earn eight points with his eighth place finish which could still prove crucial in the title race.
