Shanghai : 250cc race
The World Champion and red hot favourite to retain the 250cc title, Jorge Lorenzo, produced another dominant display in Shanghai today, taking his third victory of the season at the Sinopec Great Wall Lubricants Grand Prix of China - to extend his lead
in the general classification to 27 points.
The in-form 20 year-old Fortuna Aprilia rider crossed the finishing line 3.904s ahead of his nearest challenger, Alvaro Bautista, making up for an early mistake which saw him lose the lead on the opening lap.
Having started the race on pole, Lorenzo's first lap error saw him run wide to let Andrea Dovizioso and four other riders through. But the title-holder showed the technique which won him the championship last year, getting the very best from his Aprilia machinery to regain the lead by the sixth lap.
By the half way point Spaniard Lorenzo had built up a significant lead, was more than four seconds clear by lap 14 and never looked back from there.
Turkish Grand Prix winner and last year's World Championship runner-up Dovizioso (Kopron Team Scot) was disappointed to finish third having been in the lead early in the race.
Dovizioso was caught by 125cc World Champion Alvaro Bautista (Master – Mapfre Aspar) for second place in the final couple of laps, the pair doing battle for the final two podium spots right at the end of the race – with Bautista getting the better of the Italian on the 14th corner of the last lap.
Fourth place went to Bautista's Aspar team-mate Alex de Angelis, Red Bull KTM's Mika Kallio was fifth and Team Toth Aprilia's Hector Barbera was sixth – having started in second place on the grid.
