Karting career the key to successMcLaren Mercedes test driver Pedro de la Rosa says not commencing his karting career reduced his chances of ever winning a Grand Prix.
"I have been on the podium before," the Spaniard told the magazine FHM, "but what every driver
really wants to do is win."
De la Rosa, 36, admits that returning to a race cockpit and holding aloft a winner's trophy is now unlikely.
He raced in F1 no fewer than 72 times for Arrows, Jaguar and McLaren, but has settled into a test driver role after missing out on the race seat in 2007 alongside countryman
Fernando Alonso.
De la Rosa said: "My biggest handicap was dedicating myself to radio controlled car racing until the age of 14."
"For Formula One you really have to start in go-karts when you are really young."
"If I had done things differently I would probably be where I am today at the age of 25, not 35."
