Alonso and Schumacher take on Tiger WoodsThe world of Formula One is well represented after the nominees for the eighth running of the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards were announced on Tuesday.
Tennis' Roger Federer is the defending winner of the World Sportsman
of the Year plaudit, and he will be challenged by Tiger Woods. But
Fernando Alonso is also in the running, as is
Michael Schumacher who retired in October.
GP2 Champion and new McLaren Mercedes signing Lewis Hamilton is up for the Breakthrough of the Year honour, and defending winner Renault for the team prize.
The nominees are selected by more than 120 journalists all around the world, and a jury of 43 legendary sportspeople including former F1 world champion Emerson Fittipaldi pick the winners, who receive their awards at a televised ceremony in April.
