A decade on from the last drivers’ titleFallen Formula One giants Williams are determined to put one of the worst seasons in the British team's history behind them in 2007 and once again challenge for the world championship.
Team founder Frank Williams said: "Without
question, 2006 was not our finest year but I am delighted to see how the entire Williams workforce has pulled together and redoubled its efforts over the winter. It is how you perform in adversity that really counts."
Co-founder Patrick Head added that he and Williams were ‘ashamed’ of the team's performance in 2006 when the former world champions finished a lowly eighth in the championship with just 11 points.
Last year's performance was the team's worst since 1978, a woeful showing for a team with nine world titles under its belt but whose last championship was clinched by Jacques
Jacques Villeneuve in 1997.
"We are optimistic of our chances of success compared to the terrible season we had in 2006," said Head.
Since their foundation in 1977, Williams have won nine Formula One constructors championship and seven drivers’ titles through the likes of Alan Jones (1980), Keke Rosberg (1982), Nelson Piquet (1987), Nigel Mansell (1992), Alain Prost (1993), while the team won back-to-back drivers titles in 1996 and 1997 courtesy of Damon Hill and
Jacques Villeneuve.
