The nation's sportswriters instead voted
that Michael Greis, a Winter Olympic biathlete, is more deserving of the plaudit which was presented at a gala ceremony in Baden-Baden.
Schumacher amassed 1,645 votes compared to Greis' 3,126. International football striker Miroslav Klose came in third.
Germany's World Cup football team, meanwhile, earned the title of team of the year.
