Schumacher on his Formula One exitSeven time World Champion
Michael Schumacher says he does not regret quitting Formula One.
Despite being renowned for his compulsive love for the sport, the 37-year-old wrote in his official biography that he felt 'much more relief
than nostalgia' as he competed in his final Grand Prix.
"Mostly I felt relieved," a translation of the German text in 'Schumacher' - ghost-written by his PR assistant Sabine Kehm - reads.
Schumacher said: "I felt much more relief than nostalgia - I would say it was 90 per cent relief.
"After the 2005 season I found myself asking 'Why do I want to go on?' and I could no longer find the right answer."
The German driver does, however, admit to a little sadness at the concept of never returning to the wheel of a Grand Prix racer.
On more than one occasion at his Brazilian finale, for example, Schumacher said he found himself saying in his head: 'This is the last time you will do this'.
He explained: "On the Thursday evening (at Interlagos) my mechanics gave me a big photo to which they had all added their best wishes.
"I saw on it the phrase 'You are one of us' in Italian, and I could not read any more at that time - I would have become too emotional," Schumacher admitted.
