Spanish fans naturally vote for FernandoSpain's leading racing magazine, Grand Prix, has perhaps unsurprisingly named
Fernando Alonso as the best driver of 2006.
More than fifty per cent of the voting readers plumped for the 25-year-old World Champion from Oviedo,
with
Michael Schumacher and
Kimi Raikkonen respectively attracting just 11.4 and 1.8 per cent of the votes.
Ferrari, however - despite failing to win the constructors' title - piped Renault to the post in the categories for best car, best engine and best race strategy.
"(Alonso) is a very special guy," said McLaren boss Ron Dennis, who added this week that he was looking forward to welcoming the Spaniard to the Woking team in January. "He does not seek fame and he is just passionate about driving racing cars. He is even more passionate about winning."
