"I did make wrong decisions"Jenson Button has justified his contract wrangles of the past by insisting that they led to his maiden win in Turkey.
In 2004, despite the existence of a valid contract, the English driver announced that he wanted to switch to Williams, but
F1's Contract Recognition Board ruled that Button must stay put at BAR-Honda.
The 26-year-old subsequently signed a contract to drive for Williams in 2006 and beyond, but later baulked at the prospect and successfully launched a multi-million dollar campaign to stay at the Brackley-based team.
Button's wavering inspired critics, led by former team-mate Jacques
Jacques Villeneuve, to observe that the Briton lacked loyalty to his employers in Formula One.
But in an interview with the Sunday Times newspaper, Button initially pointed the finger at his former management team.
"The people I had looking after me were completely wrong," he said, "but they can't take all of the flak."
"I did make wrong decisions, but I have learnt from them, and in a way, if they hadn't happened, I might not have won my first Grand Prix."
Button insists that successful sportsmen must be selfish, 'otherwise you are never going to achieve'.
He continued: "It's either sit there and never win a race, or fight for it and go on to win a race or a championship."
