No surprise to see Schumacher out of the teamJarno Trulli
has told his Toyota team to make a move for double world champion Fernando Alonso
should he decide to leave McLaren, reports said Thursday. Ralf Schumacher
announced this week that he would be leaving Toyota
when his contract expires at the end of the current season, leaving a vacancy on the Japanese team.
Alonso has meanwhile been unsettled at McLaren almost since he joined the team last winter. Rumours have linked the Spaniard with a possible return to Renault, but Trulli says he would be a perfect fit at Toyota.
"Yes, it's true. I told the bosses: if you want a good, fast, reliable driver, there is Fernando," Trulli was quoted as saying by the Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport.
"It was a bit of a provocation but I would be happy if he came over, even though I don't know if he would. To have such a champion would give Toyota an idea of where they are and would sweep away many doubts."
Trulli admitted that he was not surprised to hear of Schumacher's imminent departure.
"It was in the air," he said. "I've always had a fair relationship with him, even though Ralf doesn't talk to anyone."
